The present book is a new link in the unique chain of Cultivated Flora, the series of monographic volumes initiated by N.I. Vavilov, and the first one published in English. It reports on more than sixty years of researching the genetic resources of lupin. Research materials were represented by the lupin collection of the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (VIR), now storing over 2500 accessions of different lupin species collected by plant explorers all over the world. Vavilov’s works on plant genetic resources served as a theoretical basis for these researches. In their investigations, the authors have used lupin-specific methodologies developed at the Vavilov Institute.

The book deals with new data in the theory of lupin breeding. Biodiversity of this crop, interspecific and intraspecific classifications, results of genetic studies, and source material for various breeding trends are extensively presented. Much attention has been devoted to the issues of sustainable utilization of lupin diversity for solving breeding problems. Conventional breeding methods have been considered from the viewpoint of their efficiency under given conditions, with concurrent presentation of new ingenious methods worked out at VIR and description of breeding advancements and cultivars inventories. This book is the outcome of continuous experimental research conducted by the authors and is complemented with updated facts and figures from other scientific publications.
