THE PAST

The first raft project took place in the summer of 2004 in Lithuania. The raft was built with the help of locals in the yard of the alternative art centre Uzupio Art Incubators, on the territory of the micronation Uzupio Respublica, located by the river Vilnale in the centre of the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius.

All the construction materials, wood and plastic bottles, were collected from the streets and trash containers of the surrounding area.

The actual river journey was 350 km long. It took 8 days and went through the rich country of the rivers Vilnale, Neris and Nemunas. The rafting ended into the small village Smalininkai at the border of Kaliningrad, Russia.

The biggest attractions on the journey were the practical work on the raft, the ever changing circumstances of the moving water and the beautiful nature of Lithuania. The slow movement of the river awoke a strong feeling of living in the moment.

Positive attention by the public, both, in Vilnius as well as on the way made this project a great success.
