Important modern music styles are:

• jazz swing
• bebop
• bossa nova
• samba
• calypso
• reggae
• son
• rumba
• gypsy jazz
• funk
• soul
• jazz rock ( "fusion")
• blues
• bluegrass
• country & western
• gospel
• "pop" ( whatever that is...)
• rhythm & blues
• rock'n'roll
• rockabilly

What to Do

At least learn to fake credibly in each and every one of the above styles. This involves:

• listening in order to get the feel of the styles
• learning clichés/ licks typical of the styles
