What Is Genre/ Style?

Important modern music genres/ styles are:

  • jazz swing
  • bebop
  • bossa nova
  • samba
  • calypso
  • reggae
  • son
  • rumba
  • salsa
  • gypsy jazz
  • funk
  • soul
  • jazz rock ( "fusion")
  • blues
  • bluegrass
  • country & western
  • gospel
  • "pop" ( whatever that is...)
  • rhythm & blues
  • rock'n'roll
  • rockabilly

What to Do

At least learn to fake credibly in each and every one of the above genres/ styles. This involves:

  • listening in order to get the feel of the genres/ styles
  • learning clichés/ licks typical of the genres/ styles
