Canoe fishing trip to "old" Finland
The fishing trip is in the forest Lappland area of the Kola penninsula where
there are numerous fishable lakes, rivers and streams . The majority of the
lakes and rivers haven't been fished in decades. These areas used to belong to
Finland before WWII and are considered "old Finland". The seasons is from
mid-summer to August. The catch is usually large trout, grayling, pike and perch.
The average size of the fish is much bigger than those seen in Western Europe.
The whole area can be used by the fishing group. Fishing happens by either
casting from the canoes or by trolling lures/spinners behind the canoe whilst
paddling. In the evenings the fishermen can walk to the nearby rivers that are
located near the campsites to flyfish for grayling or try for big lake whitefish.
The guide will take the group via rivers and wilderness lakes towards the final
destination of Lounakoski. The trip is well suited to those who want to spend a
week in an area where there are no roads, no major centers of population and has
an unspoilt nature and scenery. All lakes have very large populations of fish to
catch so fishing is idilic and rewarding.
Equipment.: your canoe should be suitable for a trip of this kind and should be
equipped with a spare paddle. Equipment is recommened to be packed into barrels
or protected from the water in case of capsize. The fish have been caught on
normal sized lures and small spinners. Flyfishing with dry flies and wets have
been successful as well as the use of small streamers. A normal single handed
fly rod and/or light spinning rod is suitable.
The camp will at the end of each day be set up in a new location. The entire
group is expected to assist in setting it up. Meals will be made of provisions
brough along and with fish caught during the trip. Breakfast and dinner will be
eaten in camp and a light lunch will be eaten along the way (sandwiches and coffee).
The trip starts at Ivalo airport in Northern Finland (reachable with Finnair)
and a group transportation will be arranged to the border crossing at Rajajoosepi.
Once Russian border formalities have been completed the group will proceed to
Kallokoski at which point the Luttoriver will be crossed. After crossing the
Lutto river the group willl be transported via cars to the Kolla river where
the canoe trip will start. With canoes the group will paddle down the Kolla river
until Vuenjauri. From there canoing will pass through rivers until Paijauri.
At that point a dry land hauling of the canoes will occur. This is the most
demanding and hardest point of the entire trip. The canoes will be pulled and
carried to Lounas lake. From Lounas lake the canoes will be paddle down the
Lounas river back to the Lutto river which is the final point of the canoe trip.
At Lounaskoski cars and trailers will be waiting to take the group and canoes
via the border crossing point back to Finland.
