Ice Fishing Trip to the Tundra

Ice fishing trip to the Kola peninsula's mountainous tundra. The area includes tens of thousands of square kilometers of unihabited tundra, where thousands of various sized lakes and rivers are fishable. The majority of the lakes and rivers haven't been fished for decades and some probably never have been fished before. The catch is on average larger than what is normally in Western Europe. The season is roughly April and May depending on the conditions. Normal catches included large trout and arctic char. In addition large grayling and the occasion enormous pike are caught.

For the ice fisherman thousands of various sized lakes and rivers are reserved. These areas have crystal clear water and each day the location is changed to a new lake or river. Transportation is arranged with Western ski-doos that have sledges behind them. In the sledge a reindeer hide and seat is provided. The guides will transport the group from fishing site to fishing site and are continously at the disposal of the group.

Equipment: ice fishing rods should be loaded with extremely thick monofiliment line 0.35 mm or strong braided line. Reels should be continously checked that line can be played off if needed. Ice fishing lures, spoons and other ice fishing tackle have provided good catches. The ice drill should be a minimum of 5 inches in diameter (if you bring your own) and should use an extention piece (ice is thick!!!). Fishing clothing should be wind proof since it always is windy on the tundra. Suggested gear : floation suit, ice fishing overalls, warm footwear and gloves.

The camp is located near to a tundra lake and accomodation will be provided in a cabin or heated tent that has in addition to an air matresses also reindeer hides. Meals such as breakfast and dinner are provided in the camp and lunch will be provided in the fishing area so it can be eaten whilst fishing.

The trip starts at Ivalo from where a group transportation will be arranged to Rajajoosepi border crossing point. Once the border formalities have been completed then the group will continue to proceed to the tundra via Murmansk. The trip is expected to take 5 to 6 hours. Once arrival at the destination, the group will move to ski-doos that will be waiting for the groups arrival. The ski-doos will take the fishermen to the came where the cook will be waiting with a lunch and warm accomodation. After lunch fishing can commence in lakes near to the camp. During the coming days the fishing will be in the nearby lakes and rivers. On the last night the group will return to Murmansk where hotel accomodation will be provided including a sauna and dinner. On the last morning after breakfast the return trip to Finland will start.
