A grayling fishing trip to Kurga
A grayling fishing trip to the fish rich rivers of the Kola penninsula. The
season starts as soon as the ice sheets melt and continues until they reappear
depending on the weather. The best part of the season is usually in July and
August time frame, when the large graylings have migrated from the lakes into
the river systems. A normal catch for a trip can be in the thousands and some
of those can be large specimens that break the 2.2lb mark. An occasional large
trout can also be caught
The Kurga is a wilderness river that flows from the tundra to lake Lovosero.
The river is well suited for one handed fly rods and light spinning gear. Catch
and release is the main fishing principle, although the odd fish for the camp
fire can be taken.
Approximately 60km of river is reserved for the trip. The second day is reserved
for transfer of the group and equipment to the upper reaches of the river by
tracked vehicle, where the first camp is located The duration of the first move
is 5 hours. In the vicinity of the first camp the fisherman can fish both the
nearby river and the lake. River crossings can be made in rubber boats if you
wish to fish the opposite bank. The following day the fishermen will use the
rubber inflatable boats to descend the river and fish suitable spots on the way.
The cook will follow with all the additional equipment in a raft picking up
stragglers. This riding of the river in rubber boats will continue until the
group reaches Lovosero lake from where the boats will be towed to the Lovosero
village.
Fishing tackle
Fishing tackle wise small flies that imitate insects work well. Dry flies and
nymphs work as do small streamers. Small spinners and Rapala lures are also
recommended if using spinning tackle.
Accomodation
Tents and air matresses will be provided in camp. You will need your own
sleeping bag. Of course you can bring your own tent if you wish to camp alone
or wish to have more peace. The camp will be moved each day down stream to a
new location where fisihing can occur. Meals are provided in the camp; breakfast,
lunch and support. On the last evening at Ylatuloma a sauana evening will be
arranged. Recommended to pack you gear in water proof bags.
The trip
The trip begins at Ivalo airport (located in Northern Finland; accessible via
Finnair) as soon as the afternoon flight has arrived. From the airport you will
be transported across the border crossing (Raja-Joosepi) passing through the
Russian border formalities. After the Russian border formalities the trip will
continue to Lovosero, which is expected to take approximately 7 hours. In the
village of Lovosero accomodation will be arranged in a hotel where dinner will
be provided. After breakfast the next day the group will move to the boats via
tracked vehicles from where the trip will continue to the fishing area. Expected
duration of this move is 5 hours. Once we arrive the camp will be set up and
fishing will commence. The next days are reserved for fishing for specimen
grayling and slowly the group will move down the river in rubber boats towards
Lovosero lake. From there car transportation will be provided for the move to
Ylatuloma where the hotel accomodation is reserved. At the hotel a sauna evening
and dinner will be arranged. After breakfast on the next day the trip home will
commence. Both the departure and arrival will be on a Saturday unless otherwise
agreed with the group.
