Once Upon a Time in America

They didn’t have much time. The twister was approaching at devastating speed. Helen tried to find a safe way forward but wherever she looked , the result was always the same. Empty plains, whirling wind, horrendous rain. Soon they would be gone with the wind, too.

Harry said,"I guess this is as good as it gets. We’ll have to stay here and wait for the storm to ease up." Helen agreed.

They took their sleeping bags and lay down behind a big bolder facing the gale…

Meanwhile, the Phoenix team was doing much better. They had reached the outskirts of a small village. First they thought the village was abandoned, until they found an old man mumbling about a boy who had been taken away by some men in black. The team had a bad feeling about this piece of news. They had to move fast. Their satellite-enabled palm-radar was still working, so they took the mask off , switched on the AI and very soon they could hear the boy’s heartbeat and see him on the portable screen.

Harry woke up with grease all over him. He saw an old wreck of a truck on the other side of the bolder. It mus have hit the stone hard. Then Harry noticed that the wind had eased up.

Helen was still asleep. Harry moved a bit. Helen opened her eyes, looked at him and wondered, " Why are you so dirty, Harry? " Harry pointed at the truck and said, " I suppose it rained more that cats and dogs while we were sleeping." Then his beeper went off. The Phoenix team! They had rescued the boy. They were going to checkpoint B with the others. Harry and Helen picked up their equipment, started to move west as fast as they could.

Checkpoint B was on the 31st floor of the Independence Day Hotel in Tucson. When the teams arrived there, the hotel was crowded with peculiarly dressed people. "They’re having a monster’s ball tonight" said the receptionist, "so you’d better watch out your movements." When Harry and Helen reached the door of room 3133, their hearts were pounding . Would they see their son again? What had happened to him?…

The reunion was nothing short of cloud nine.
