ENGLISH STUDIES

The purpose of this site is to tell you what it is like to study English at Pälkäne Upper Secondary School - that is Senior High School to all you folks in America, or the Sixth Form to our British readers. Pälkäne is a small town 35 kilometres to the south-east of Tampere, one of the few major cities in Finland. Finns might know the place for its brave struggle to stop the evil neigbouring cities from drowning the beautiful ridge formation in the town centre under water (by showering tons and tons of water on it 24/7 to create artificial ground water). In terms of international fame, there isn't much to tell, except that our school is a member of European School Network which gives students a chance to experience school life in another European country. The school building dates back to the 50s, but a thorough renovation was completed inside in the mid-90s. At the moment we have two computer classrooms and a digitally operated language lab. But despite all the technical facilities, the biggest assets we have are comfortably sized classes, e.g. the number of students attending English lessons varies from 15-25, and a fairly laid-back relationship between the students and the staff. English teaching follows the national guidelines - click the COURSES link for further information - with emphasis on the basic skills required for a successful graduation.
