Heathen Hoof is another name to add to the burgeoning list of NWOBHM revivalists, alongside Wolf, Metalucifer and Gorgon. The gruff, slurry vocals take some getting used to, but the incisive guitarwork is eerily spot-on, these duelling licks seemingly coming straight out of dusty 7" vinylgrooves circa 1981. "I'm banging my head against the gates of Hades" indeed – fucking class. 8 / 10 Terrorizer Heathen Hoofin takana on mies nimeltään Ari Honkonen. Suurelle yleisölle nimi ei ehkä sano yhtään mitään, mutta jotkut saattavat tietää miehen sellaisista bändeistä kuin Morningstar ja Minotauri. Heathen Hoofin demon soundit ovat melko karut, mutta kumminkin sen verran tasokkaat, että kuuntelu sujuu mutkitta. Musiikillisesti bändi on jossain 80-luvun alkuvuosissa, ja sellaiset nimet, kuten Demon, Paul Di'Annon aikainen Iron Maiden ja Trouble ovat mielestäni aika lähellä musiikillisesti. Levyllä on kolme kappaletta (Banging Horns, Son Of The Horned God, Night Hunter), jotka kaikki ovat Honkosen käsialaa. Mies soittaa myös toista kitaraa ja laulaa taustoja. Varsinainen vokalisti Mikko Nurmi hoitaa tonttinsa ihan kunnioitettavasti. Jonkinasteista okkultistista meininkiä tässä kai sanoitusten puolesta tavoitellaan. Sitähän heavyssa on tehty kautta aikojen. Paikoin biiseistä voi tulla jopa muinaiset Hammer–yhtiön kauhuelokuvat mieleen. Ne jotka Cloven Hoofin muistavat, tietänevät mistä on kyse, eli karheaa laulua ja doom-melodiaa. Arvosteluun on vaikea löytää sanoja, sillä vanhana Satan-diggarina musiikin aikana mieluummin istahtaa sohvalle ja alkaa muistelemaan menneitä. Musiikissa löytyy myös lieviä omaperäisyyksiä: Banging Hornsin tuplakitarat kuulostavat sanalla sanoen oudoilta, ikään kuin samalla taajuudella soitettu Metallican Master of Puppetsin soolo. Mutta sinänsä ne kuulostavat hyvältä vaikka idea onkin karmea ja puistattava. Huippukohta demolla on Son of the Horned God, josta syöksähtää mieleen musiikillisesti The Scorpionsin ja Iron Maidenin hybridi, mutta laulu on silkkaa Cloven Hoofia. Night Hunter huokuu heviä henkeä ja kaikkine nyansseineen siitä voisikin koomisesti povata underground-hittiä. Bändi on toimiva ja pitkä tulevaisuus on edessä. Ainoaksi ongelmaksi voi muodostua kitaristi Ari Honkosen tilanne, hänellä kun riittää töitä jo ennestään kahden toimivan bändin kanssa. 4- / 5 Ville Lehtinen, Imperiumi Bändi on vaihtanut rumpalia sitten demon äänitysten. Täytyy vain toivoa, että uusi kaveri on yhtä kova kannuttaja kuin edeltäjänsä, sillä juuri rumpali on bändin koossa pitävä voima, ja hänen rikasta sekä monipuolista työskentelyä kuuntelee mielikseen. Heathen Hoofin tyylisuunta löytyy brittiläisestä heavysta, mutta Äänekosken pojilla on paljon riisutumpi ja simppelimpi linja. Juuri siksi kappaleet eivät oikein pääse paljastamaan parhaita puoliaan, ja kun vielä laulu on jossain määrin monotonista ja väritöntä, kokonaisuus jää latteaksi. Marko Säynekoski, Soundi Treenikämpällä nauhoitetun demon äänenlaadulla ei pääse kerskailemaan, mutta onneksi herrat tiedostavat tämän myös itse. Vaikka kyseessä onkin vain demo, niin levy-yhtiöitä lähestyttäessä kannattaa hommaan panostaa enemmän. Kuitenkin jo nykyisessä muodossaan se antaa riittävän vakuuttavan näytteen siitä, että ainakin biisin kirjoitus on herrain hallussa. Tyylikseen bändi nimeää brittiheavymetallin uudenaallon, siinä myös oikeaan osuen. Vaikkakin musiikki rinnastuu soundeista johtuen allekirjoittaneen tajunnassa erääseen legendaariseen Samhain-nimiseen orkesteriin. Lyyrisesti nyt liikutaan paljon matalammilla vesillä, mutta jotain samaa tästä löytyy. Soitannollisesti demon tulkinta on haastava tehtävä kohtuullisen ohuista ja suttuisista soundeista johtuen, mutta ainakaan suurempia säröjä ei korviin osu. Siltä osin tarkempi analyysi vaatisi parempilaatuisen näytteen, muutoin on läsnä oikeusmurhan vaara. Kuinka arvostella sellaisia osia, joita ei demolla kuule? Sen sijaan biisit olivat sikäli vakuuttavia, että mahdollisuuden mukaan niiden toimivuus tulee käydä toteamassa myös livenä. Ehkä silloin voi sanella myös lopullisen tuomion bändistä tällä hetkellä. A bit of punkish speed, a voice that is raunchier than David "Water" Potter once was in CLOVEN HOOF. All kinds of highlights at once. "Banging Horns" JAGUAR-fast and the riff has some features of "Iron Maiden". "Son of the Horned God" is exactly as "petty occult" as the lyrics often were in the heyday of the NWOBHM. There's also some IRON MAIDEN-guitars here and Mikko could easily have replaced Luther Beltz on any of the 80-ies albums of WITCHFYNDE. Mikko is the perfect remedy for Luther's high pitch screaming. The entire HEATHEN HOOF, Ari Honkonen, guitars and background vox, Jani Lamberg, guitars, Tomi Rankainen, bass, Benjam Riininen, drums and of cause Mikko have done their NWOBHM-homework. The closer "Night Hunter" sounds delightfully English and could have been a sampler from "Metal for Muthas" from 1980. This is not a recommended purchase but a commanded buy. Der gute Mann scheint trotz der Arbeit mit seinen beiden Bands MINOTAURI (Doom Metal) und MORNINGSTAR (Epic Metal) immer noch Zeit für neue Projekte zu finden. Mit HEATHEN HOOF hat er jetzt eine Band am Start, die – wie sollte es anders sein – in eine ganz andere musikalische Ecke als seine anderen Combos geht. Die Band frönt dem kultigen Sound der NWOBHM à la CLOVEN HOOF bzw. dem obskuren Metal à la HEAVY LOAD. Die Produktion dieser Demo (kommt als CD-R daher) ist recht ordentlich, wenn auch die Gitarren etwas mehr knallen könnten. Mit Sänger Mikko Nurmi hat man einen echten Ausnahme-Sänger an Bord. Der Mann hat wohl die majestätisch-barbarischste Stimme, die ich je gehört habe! Schon der Opener "Banging Horns" klingt so, als wäre er vor 23 Jahren geschrieben worden. Exzellente, zweistimmige Gitarren-Melodien und ein rockiger Text sorgen für das richtige Albion-Feeling. Dann ertönt mit "Son Of The Horned God" eine heidnische Doom-Hymne par excellence, die auch auf "The Opening Ritüal" (CLOVEN HOOF) hätte stehen können, man höre das fantastische Solo und die fürstliche Melodyline. Der Slo-Mo-Banger geht sofort ins Ohr, und der barbarische Gesang von Mikko tut sein Übriges. Zum Schluss ertönt dann noch das ultraeingängige "Night Hunter", welches ein Finale offenbart, das wohl auch Lee Payne und seine Mannen nicht hätten besser machen können. Stonerrockchick.com Finland's HEATHEN HOOF is a side-project of MORNINGSTAR and MINOTAURI mainman & guitarist Ari Honkonen. As a matter of fact they're a quintet, including plenty of other (ex) MORNINGSTAR members, and they started out in the summer of 2002. After only two rehearsals they decided to enter the Sounds Of Manala rehearsal studio, in order to record a first demo on a digital 8-track machine. That was in August 2002, and on the evidence of this demo Germany's Metal Coven Records offered the band a deal. The band subsequently went into a professional studio one cold Wednesday evening in September 2002, to re-record one of the songs. And thus Son Of The Horned God ended up being released on a split 7" with Germany's AXEWIELDER in early 2003. So far for a short HEATHEN HOOF history lesson, let's concentrate on Demo 2002 from here on. Unlike Ari's other bands HEATHEN HOOF is neither epic nor doom, but rather in the N.W.O.B.H.M. vein. The up-tempo opener Banging Horns has this typical early 1980's British sound, including cool and melodic guitars along the lines of very early IRON MAIDEN. And with rather rudimentary vocals, which I'm sure not everyone will enjoy. Son Of The Horned God is slower and not strictly N.W.O.B.H.M. sounding, rather mid 1980's heavy metal. In fact, the vocals remind me of HEAVY LOAD on this one, to a certain degree. Night Hunter concludes this first demo by Finland's self-proclaimed N.W.O.B.H.M. masters in an excellent way. I know, HEATHEN HOOF's material is in no way innovative, but being a longtime N.W.O.B.H.M. fanatic myself I just can't help but enjoying Demo 2002. The only thing they should pay more attention to next time is a better, stronger production. In the meantime the band has been writing new songs and as soon as their new drummer will be completely settled in they'll start recording songs for what most likely will turn out to be another demo CD. Den of Iniquity Finnish metal guru Ari Honkonen (Minotauri, Morningstar) may be underground metal's equivalent to Tomas Lindberg at this point. Ari's got his hands in more metal projects than the devil himself. And thank god, I say. Between his Minotauri, Morningstar and Heathen Hoof projects, Ari is doing his damndest to fan the flames of NWOBHM-influenced traditional metal. And doing a hell of a job, I must say. Heathen Hoof project sees Ari and bandmates kneeling before the altar of Cloven Hoof, Witchfynde and the first two Iron Maiden albums to produce three songs of old school delight. Mikko Rurmi's vocal delivery is that of the gruff, big-lunged but world-weary metal warrior spinning yarns about his dealings with the Horned One and past battlefield glories. Like all Honkonen-related projects, there's no triggers, compressors or Pro-tools involved. The Honkonen/Lamberg dual guitar workouts are very reminiscent of the classic days of Murray/Smith and the drum sound is that off real sticks hitting real drum heads. A definite throwback to the glory days of metal. The obvious drawback to this demo is the sheer number of songs. Three numbers of this quality is the musical equivalent of a cock tease... they get you going but your left with an unfulfilled desire for more. Hopefully that will happen for Heathen Hoof in the coming months. Not that I have heard of them myself but hey, you may have. Anyway, what we have here is a 3-track demo from the guys and I can't help but hear a very early Maiden influence in the music (the vocals though are low and gruff and sound nothing like Paul or Bruce at all) that made it quite enjoyable.
