Spring 2002

Valkeakoski, Finland (Geographic Longitude = 24E; Geographic Latitude = 61N; Corrected Magnetic Latitude = 57)

19th of April

Lens:28mm f/1.8 at f/2.0
Films: Fuji Provia 400F(slide)
Exposure times:15 sec.
Other Photographers: Check out SpaceWeather.com's 17-20 April 2002 Aurora Gallery
Other notes: Hmmm...I can't complain about the display itself, it was very beautiful in my mind. Pictures just didn't come out as nicely as I hoped they would. Anyway, I enjoyed a lot of this brief display and next time I will use also 30 sec. exposure time.

17th of April

Lens:28mm f/1.8 at f/2.0
Films: Fuji Provia 400F(slide)
Exposure times:I have no idea....but the pics were taken about one hour after the local sunset!
Other Photographers: Check out SpaceWeather.com's 17-20 April 2002 Aurora Gallery
Other notes: What a bust!!! I had been waiting for a good show for almost 6 months and this particular storm had been going on strong for about 12 hours before it came enough dark to see something in Finland. So everything looked sooo promising, but guess what happened!? Yes! .....happened, the storm died down with same speed as the skies grew dark here AND grew alive again and intensified as the morning light became too strong for anykind of aurora watching...

Other notes:

  • Well, it was about time!!! I had been waiting for decent aurora since 6th of Nov. 2001, but till now EVERY single little better show had been clouded out. So, this was my first somekind of auroral storm this year. Yet the display itself wasn't that very good, but after that long aurora free time it was great to see at least something! I spend most of the night watching for skies and aurora. Most of the night there was at least some green arc visible and two times there was somekind substorm, but....When I got home I was more than surprised to see that it was a Kp5 "storm aurora". To me it looked more like an good Kp3 minor display...Well, better than nothing anyway. :-)
