Norwegian Forest Cats developed by natural selection in the harsh climate of Scandinavia, where only the strongest and healthiest cats were able to reproduce. The Norwegians were interested in this breed already in 1930's. The first Norwegian Forest Cat came into Finland in 1979.

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large strongly built cat with a long body and solid bone structure. The hind legs are higher than the front legs. The head is triangular shaped with equal sides and a straight profile. The eyes are large and oval. The ears are large and have lynx-like tufts and long hair growing out of them. Norwegian Forest Cats have woolly undercoat and water repellant uppercoat of long, coarse and glossy hair. A fully coated cat has a shirtfront, full frill and knickerboxes. The tail is long and bushy. Nearly all colours are permitted.

In FIFe shows the Norwegian Forest Cats are judged in 9 colour groups.
