First of all we'd like to welcome you to our pages.
In the following pages we will try to explain some of the basic ideas about this wonderful plant, where we grow, process and distribute it, and some of its qualities and benefits. We hope you enjoy the page and please don't hesitate to e-mail us with any questions.
Our small family business Rhodiola Rosea is located in Kemi, Lapland, Finland, in the village of Kittilänjärvi. The stony fields used for growing Rhodiola Rosea are in their natural state and, except for the burning of old growth every spring time,

the fields have never been chemically fertilized nor have any kind of pesticides ever been used. The river runs through these fields and produces a strong mist during the summer nights making it an ideal growing location for Rhodiola Rosea because of its love of misty weather. During the summer Rhodiola Rosea bathes under the Midnight Sun and in the winter time arctic frost and thick layer of snow hammer it down. It is because of these extreme Nordic circumstances that our arctic Rhodiola Rosea has such a strong curative power.

We have used our arctic Rhodiola Rosea (common name" rose root") extensively over the years both privately, used by friends and ourselves and also through the clients of Sini Marjanen. Because of this we have first hand knowledge of the effects of this beautiful plant. We have compared the feedback from our own experience and that of our friends and clients to several international studies dealing with the effects of Rhodiola Rosea. We can sincerely recommend Rhodiola Rosea as an adaptogen for almost any physical or psychological symptom.
The harvesting begins with a lot of muscles and a spade. Each root is individually treated. The root is dug up, the soil shaken off; it is then opened up and examined by hand. After it has been rinsed in a freezing cold river piece by piece, all the old or rotten parts are thrown away. In this way we make sure that the final product is of the best possible quality. The root is then chopped into tiny pieces by knife. At this stage, the product is checked again for quality. For the drying process we use electricity produced by wind power. The heat from the drying process is recycled to heat our house. All the harvesting and drying takes place very early in the spring or late in the autumn, when heating for the house is most needed
Our homefarm is small and our Rhodiola Rosea plantation is our hobby. Therefore the amount of Rhodiola Rosea we can produce is limited. We are looking for other Rhodiola Rosea growers in Lapland so that supply and demand can be met in the coming years. If you know of anyone growing Rhodiola Rosea, we will be grateful if you could get in touch.

Portions: The recommended amount is 1 teaspoon mixed in water 1-3 times a day. Depending on the symptoms one can alter the amount.
Side effects: Rhodiola rosea has not been found to cause any harmful side effects. In the case of a very strong inbalance one might feel slightly uncomfortable when starting to use Rhodiola rosea because the mind and body are trying to attain balance.

Rhodiola rosea (Rhodia radix/ Rodia riza/Sedum rosea)
Rhodiola rosea is the only known European adaptogen. Adeptogens include plants that have a holistically balancing effect on the human body. The most popular adaptogenic is ginseng. Even so, scientists who study adaptogenes have found that the best affecting adaptogenes are Rhodiola rosea, Shisandra Chinensis and Acanthopanax.
Rhodiola rosea has been used as a medical plant for centuries. It's an ideal medical plant, because according to studies it has no side effects with short or long-term use. Rhodiola rosea has been studied around the world and harmful effects have not yet been found. Rhodiola rosea can be used for many different symptoms: tiredness, stress, chronic depression, weakness, hangovers and headaches. It helps hair growth, strengthens the memory, boosts the immune system, fights tumours and is also an anti cancer medicine…In Tsarist Russia it was used as an aphrodisiac …The Inuit eat the leaves of Rhodiola rosea
Rhodiola rosea was part of the Viking medicine chest. In the 8th century, when the Vikings discovered Iceland, they found that Rhodiola rosea was growing wild everywhere.
The Vikings would take Rhodiola rosea with them on their long sea journeys. They thought of Rhodiola rosea as a magic power plant, and among them there was a saying: " The man who uses rose root will stay powerful for two hundred years". The Vikings of today -the cosmonauts- take this powerful plant with them into space to keep their mind and body in balance.
In China and Tibet Rhodiola rosea was used as early as 2697 BC. Rhodiola rosea was mentioned in the Yellow Book of the Emperor. This plant has an essential place in the medical plant paintings made by Tibetan monks. It grows naturally in the Himalayas, the Alps and arctic areas. Rhodiola rosea needs severe circumstances and a lot of midnight sun to produce the active substances such as: salidrosid, rosavin, rosarin, rosin, cinnemyl and rhosidrin.
The way Rhodiola rosea starts its growth in the spring describes well its refreshing strength. When the first water starts flowing with the first signs of melting ice, the plant starts the new growing season. It rises from the earth and opens its yellow flowers long before other plants. Rhodiola rosea grows naturally on rocky mountain faces, at the base of misty waterfalls and along winding streams, and it often grows in places you wouldn't believe that any plant could possibly grow.
