Overview
My name is Georg Martin Rafael Gimpl. I graduated with honors in 2009 from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in the Master of Arts in New Media Program, focusing on visualization and usability. During the international, 2.5-year degree program I completed over 160 ECTS credit units, finishing with an acclaimed, SIGCHI-awarded Master's Thesis on a conceptual operating system user interface design. During my studies, I also worked for Crucible Studios, the ARKI research group, as well as on independent animation projects for both VTT and The City of Espoo.
In 2005, I graduated — again with honors — as a Bachelor of Engineering from EVTEK (Espoo – Vantaa Institute of Technology, now Metropolia), where I completed over 250 ECTS credit units during the 4-year, international degree program of Media Engineering. In 2003, I spent an exchange semester at Kwantlen University College near Vancouver, Canada. Earlier, I very successfully completed the Deutsche Schule Helsinki with the German Reifeprüfung in 2000.
Between studies, I returned to EVTEK to teach courses, and worked at Bitville on eLearning solutions for international telecom companies, as well as under my own sole proprietorship. During my studies at UIAH in the summers of 2007 and 2008, I worked at Linja Design as an user experience / graphic designer on several projects for international telecom companies, among others, and have continued working there throughout 2009.
During 2009, I worked on the graphics and user experience of the N900 mobile computer.
I chose to study in the field of media because I am greatly interested in the field of audio-visual technology, interaction, user experience, usability, the Internet, and general media design. Not only do I find this field appealing, but also see great potential in myself for creative, innovative design and production. Over the years I have created attractive web sites, rich media applications, usability tests and questionnaires, 2D & 3D graphics and animations, photography (digital and traditional), print, layout, literature, video, music, traditional drawings, paintings and compositions, and worked successfully in international teams on multiple educational and commercial projects. This diversity in interests and applied skills has proven to be very helpful in interface and interaction design, where perspective and the profound understanding of varied design aspects is required.
I speak Finnish and German as my mother tongue and have spent a full year in the USA and Canada in addition to completing my oral English high school exam and college English courses with the maximum scores. I am citizen of both Finland and Austria.
