30.3.2012

Ignis Fatuus had a gig last week at Nuclear Nightclub! We managed to make a one-camera, one-mic video out of the event, and the result can be viewed here. Enjoy!

30.3.2012

We will start recording the drum tracks to the next album next week. Ilkka is in good shape, as we have been rehearsing quite much lately.

13.2.2012

We have added the debut album to Spotify and Last.fm, so feel free to enjoy the music also there.

13.2.2012

Since the last update, dating more than a year back, we have been writing and demoing material for the forthcoming album. The demos of the new songs are now ready, and we plan to start the actual recording process in March. Jarmo will do the clean vocals, as in the previous album, and more or less everything else concerning the band will also stay the same. The songs are, of course, way better, and during the years the players have gained more weight to their expression as well as around their waists.

14.12.2010

Fiends has been reviewed in Imperiumi magazine, see the review here.

24.7.2010

It seems that the News section has not been updated in a while. We have been lately busy working with the new material for the forthcoming album. All the songs are more or less ready, and at the moment demo versions of the songs are being generated. Jarno has been recording guitars and vocals, and Late has been working with the guitars, too. Presumably, Ilkka will do the drum parts last after Jaakko gets the bass parts done.

20.11.2009

Fiends has been reviewed in Desibeli magazine, see the review here.

2.9.2009

Fiends has been reviewed in Lords of Metal magazine, see the review here.

17.8.2009

Fiends has been reviewed in MetalBite magazine, see the review here.

7.7.2009

As you can see, the album can now be loaded from the main page in wav format, too. Also the lyrics are available as pdf. Lately we have been rehearsing the new material. We have recorded all the new songs once, so that the arrangements for the leads, vocals, and synths can be carried out more easily. Overall, the songs start to be in a good shape, it seems that the basic working concept has been found for all the pieces. Naturally, there is still a lot to do especially with the vocals and solos.

18.3.2009

The full Fiends album can be downloaded from the main page and mp3 section for free in mp3 format. We plan to distribute the album in .wav format for free, too, as soon as we find a place to put the source files!

1.3.2009

The album has been submitted for mastering to Finnvox studios. More news to follow.

2.2.2009

www.ignisfatuusband.com opened.
We'll have to remove the old cjb net domain because of the problems with cjb site.

19.1.2009

Myspace pages for Ignis Fauus have been opened here. You can listen to two new songs there!

18.10.2008

We have set up mics and systems for recording the band live at the rehearsial place. The purpose is to demo some of the new songs in the near future and after that continue to work with some new songs that are not mature enough for demoing. So far, no news from the record labels.

1.10.2008

We got the promotional copies of thr album from the print yesterday. Now we just have to pack them and submit to the record labels. And wait. And pray.

We have been rehearsing quite a bit lately. There are several new songs in preparation, and the plan is to demo them in the "near" future.

16.9.2008

The promotional version of the album (the one that goes to record labels) is being printed. We assume that we will get the copies next week, and we will start sending the packages right after that.

25.7.2008

I edited the webpages, as you can see! We are preparing the promopackage to be sent to the record companies.

20.5.2008

All the recordings have been finished. We are still doing some polishing to the final mixes, but everything is there. The plan is to take some promo photographs in the next few days, and start genertaing a promo package for the record companies.

18.3.2008

Late's solos have been pretty much finished. It only took us a little more than half a year. Well, now there is only some fixing left and then we would be ready for the final mixing. Jakki talked about re-recording some bass parts in the last rehersials, we'll see how it ends up with that...

31.8.2007

A very short update. Jarno has 95% finished his parts, now there are only Late's solos and some keyboard doubling of the solos left before the final mixing. Hell yeah!

21.6.2007

Three pictures from the gig. Enjoy! We will put here also some video clips soon.

18.6.2007

The Gig went well, I'll write more about it later on. But if someone knows who filmed the gig with a video camera in the fron row, could you please contact us! We will not sue you from violating the copyright laws, but we would be delighted to see the material ourselves! Also, if you have photographs from the gig, wee would be very happy to be able to add them here!

11.6.2007

Gig 16.6.2007 at Willisika!

14.3.2007

Here are two pictures from the synth recording session. Enjoy!

20.2.2007

Last couple of weeks have been exciting for us. Jarno has been placing vocals, clean guitars, and synths to the mix, and the tracks finally start sounding as they are supposed to. The guitar solos and clean vocals are still missing, but recording them should not take a long time anymore.

18.1.2007

The synthesizers are 90% done, some minor fixes are still to be expected but the basic stuff is there. We have also been recording the clean guitars, and perhaps after one recording session they should be there, too. Clean vocals are still missing, we have persuaded Petri to do the job.

1.12.2006

The bass tracks have now been finally finished. We hope that there is no need to fix them any further than this. The next step is to concentrate on the clean guitars.

17.11.2006

We have been fixing the bass tracks for a couple of times, and I think we stille have one more round to go with them and then they are finished. Jakki had a little accident and his shoulder was not in a shape for bass playing for a couple of weeks. We have also been checking clean guitar sounds with Late and Jarno, and made some experiments with my Steinberger and Jarno's custom guitar.

28.9.2006

All the basic bass tracks have now been recorded again. Now we just have to take some time to listen to them and decide whether there is something to be corrected.

22.9.2006

We have started the bass recordings again. So far we have bass tracks for three songs done, and yes, it sounds pretty nice. Jarno has been recording vocals on some songs, and I managed to play the keyboard sections to one song last weekend.

31.8.2006

The bass tracks are still undone. We have found a suitable bass now, but we have been very busy with other things. The plan is that we'll continue the recordings within a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, Jarno has done some vocals and preliminary solos, and I have been playing the keyboards, mainly to Masquerade song which has a lot of piano playing. Lauri has been working with the lead guitar sound.

As youy have probably noticed, Antti is not playing the keyboard parts. He disappeared to Helsinki a long time ago, and we have been in contact less and less, and we decided that I'll do the keyboards for the record. We have been searching for a new keyboard player, and at least at the moment we have on interesting candidate and names of a copule of other dudes as well. I'll keep you updated!

11.8.2006

There has been no updates here lately, since I have been in the summer holidays without access to the web. We have done a lot but achieved a little, so to say. We recorded all the songs with Jaakko, just to find out that the bass was so badly out of tune that we must record everything again. In the past couple of weeks we have been serching for a suitable bass that would sound good and provide the sound in tune from all the frets.

It seems that cjb.net has been aggressively increasing the amount of advertising in the homepages, and in my opinion it is now time for us to start looking for another way of managing the Ignis Fatuus web pages.

22.6.2006

It has been quiet in the studio lately. Jarno has been busy with his new house, and we have been stuck with the bass recordings since the hard disc of our recording computer broke down. Jaakko has a spare 40 Gt hard drive that we can use from this point on, but anyway it will take time to set all the things up and running again. I have been recording the keyboards, but since I have to play very fast, the progress has been slow :).

6.6.2006

We made some test recordigngs with Jaakko yesterday, and I have to sat that the basic sound of the bass is good. We have to still set up the microphones in front of the cabinet, but the direct-in sound of the bass is already usable. This is a good start, I hope that we don't have to spend another year recording the bass!

23.5.2006

We plan to start checkin the bass sounds tomorrow, and also start the recording process as soon as possible. Jarno has done lots of work by editing the guitar tracks to decent condition. I have been slowly recording the keyboard sections to the songs, and also done some synthesizer sound programming at the same time.

16.5.2006

We moved the rest of our stuff to the new rehearsal place. I set up my drum kit, and played a couple of beats. Man, it felt good. It has been several months for me without a chance for decent practice. The acoustics of the new rehearsal place could be better, but we are working on it in an iterative fashion.

11.5.2006

We finally finished the basic guitar tracks yesterday, and moved most of our stuff to the new rehearsal place. Next we plan to set up our gear and rehearse a bit. After that we'll start recording the bass and vocals. In the meantime I keep working with the keyboards.

2.5.2006

Approximately 16 seconds of rhythm guitars are still missing. Let's see how many weeks it will take from us to nail them down.

We have been renovating new rehearsal place for us with Jarno. It has taken a couple of full working days to tear down some walls and making the doors and walls soundproof. Unlike the recording process, this project has been proceeding quite fast. It seems that from this point on, we will be rehearsing in luxurous environment.

13.2.2006

No major news this time. Some guitars are still missing, so we have not started with the bass or synthesizers yet. We hope that the guitar sessions will be over by the end of this month. Come on guys, it took us two weeks with the drums, we have been dealing with the guitars since September (nearly half a year so far!) :D.

9.1.2006

It has been pretty quiet here lately, but it certainly has not been quiet in the studio. We have been recording the basic guitar tracks for a couple of weeks, and things are going on nicely. Jarno has nearly finished his parts, and Late has already recorded guitars for some songs.

We, naturally, had an incident with the computer section cuople of weeks ago. The mother board of the recording computer died taking at least one hard drive with her, and we had to buy new board, processor, hard drives and memory. We managed to keep the costs at minimum, and Jarno has got the new machine ready and working again.

29.11.2005

Today's gig has been cancelled! Jarno and Late have both caught a bad cold. We will try to organize a similar event in a near future.

26.10.2005

A gig has been scheduled! It will be held at WilliSika in Oulu 29th of November. Serenity's End will be joining us. Check out their website.

24.10.2005

We are still checking the guitar sounds. The plan is that during this week we actually record one whole song and see how the sound fits the music. If the result is satisfactory we are ready to tape the rest of the songs, too. I have to mention here that Late has been giving a very nice input during the whole recording process so far. Since he is kind of "new" guy in the band he has a fresh view on the music and thus he has helped us from repeating the same things again and again.

3.10.2005

We have spent a few hours more on checking the guitar sounds. We have found a sound that is somehow satisfactory, but for some reason there is still a feeling in the air that we could do a bit better. We have to still test a couple of Koch cabintes besides of those Mesa/Boogie and Marshall that we have already tested.

Our pal Janne made us test his Rikstone combo, and I have to say that the tone was sweet. Very nice clean sound and very very beautiful little overdriven Little Wing -type of sound. Not suitable for Ignis Fatuus, but generally very nice amp, too.

26.9.2005

No major news this time. It seems that we have to manually gate the snare track, too, for the upcoming record since hi-hat is leaking to snare channels too severely. That means couple of extra hours of work for me. Meanwhile, Jarno and Lauri have started soundcheck for the guitars.

1.9.2005

We went rehearsing yesterday, and Jarno had a surprize for us. After seven years of waiting and wondering he had finally gathered himself up and bought a new set of tubes for his Mesa/Boogie. Now we are ready to start the recordings. Ho, it was fun to play again. After all the editing it felt good to be able to actually play the songs!

18.8.2005

I have pretty much finished editing the drum tracks. I'm now waiting for comments from Jarno and Late, and after that we are ready to start recording the guitars. I try to take some pictures of the recording setup then.

8.8.2005

I have been editing the drum tracks for a week now and I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the tracks. There is not so much to do, just cleaning some humming from tom tracks etc. I suppose it will still take a week or two to finish all drum editing, but the work is well on the way.

4.8.2005

Here are two pictures from the recording session. Enjoy!

2.8.2005

The drum tracks for the album have been recorded. We recorded the drums in four sessions between Sunday and Saturday, and most of the songs were ready in the end of the first recording day. I would say that the process was pretty smooth, we only had to use one evening to re-install the drivers for WinXP. We recorded nine songs, as was planned, and we also recorder a couple of extra songs just for fun.

The next step in the process is that I have to clean the drum tracks manually in order to avoid errorneus gate openings and drums and cymbals from leaking from track to another. I also have to do some traditional editing to some of the tracks, and I have to correct a syncronization problem caused by the use of two separate sound cards during the recording process. But I think that in a couple of weeks the drum tracks will be ready and we can start recording the guitar and bass tracks.

21.7.2005

We have started recording the album. For two days now we have been setting the recording equipment for drums. I think we'll be able to start the recording process next Saturday!

29.6.2005

We went to Imgery's rehearsal place to record the songs once more before starting the actual recordings. I'm really happy with the result, the "tape" sounds good and the joy of playing is there!

16.6.2005

Well nothing special this time. The recording process of the album will start in July. The purpose is to spend one busy week recording the drums in some nice sounding room and leave the rest of the instruments for later.

Oh, and Antti is currently living in Helsinki. Now that Tipi, Timppa and Antti live all in Helsinki, they could form an autonomous unit titled as Ignis Fatuus II. They should just hire a drummer from there. I propose Dumonee, whose compositions are perhaps even more twisted than Jarno's.

31.5.2005

Well, as you can guess the things progress, but slowly. We have been testing different synth sounds for the album, and Jarno has also tested different vocal styles for some of the songs. I hope that the actual recordings would start sometime in July.

I bought a couple of snares recently. Ludwig Acrolite from the end of 70's and Premier Signia from 90's. Both sound really good. Especially Acro will be very useful in the recording process.

21.2.2005

I have been privileged to play with a drumhead from Sonata Arctica! Jukka Zann borrowed our snare drum for the recording sessions of Dawn of Relic, and he had changed the drumhead to one left in the studio by Tommy Portimo. Now I will never change it again. A joy!

We have been rehearsing a bit lately trying to fix out the minor bugs we detected from the rehersal tape. Things proceed, but slowly.

21.1.2005

I updated my contact address. I have not moved lately but my colleague pointed out that it was anyway wrong.

17.1.2005

Oh yes, we recorded all the songs for the upcoming album in the rehersials last Friday. My feeling was that the songs went rather well despite some obvious minor mistakes. I guess we can use these tracks for designing the vocals and solos and so on.

14.1.2005

The plan is that we record the demo version of the album today at our rehearsal place. The idea is to ease the process of the actual recording by identifying the major problems now beforehand.

30.12.2004

Actually I have nothing too special to report this time. We have been playing every now and then and we plan to record a sort of demo version of the album in a few weeks. I have discussed with Jarno about the vocals on the coming album, we have a common agreement that the clean vocals will present a problem since none of the band members can actually sing :). Any volunteers? Rob Halford? Geoff Tate?

8.11.2004

The biography section has been updated. Also some pictures have been changed.

12.10.2004

Some updates to the pages. I removed Tipi's face and biography added Late's. Jakki's bio is still missing.

26.8.2004

We have made a couple of new songs, and currently we are rehearsing in order to demo them some time this autumn. The master plan is that after the demo session we'll produce a full album of songs in our own cost. Jarno will probably do most of the recording and mixing work and I will help in the production as much as I can. The new songs seem to follow the Traveller style, harsh vocals and tight rhythm section are there as well as the melodic lead synthsizer lines and fast guitar solos.

I have had some trouble with the UNIX system (mostly the file sharing) and thus the updating of the pages has been slow. But I'm working on it, I promise!

14.6.2004

A dude called Jaakko Koskiniemi has been playing bass in a few rehearsals. Very promising!

3.5.2004

The current situation of the band is that we are playing without a bass player again. We played for some time with Pekka (Tipi's brother), but currently he is too busy to play with us.

The post of the lead guitarist has been filled by Lauri Jounela some time ago.

Thus the line-up is currently as follows:

Jarno - guitar, bass, vocals
Antti - keyboards
Lauri - guitar
Ilkka - drums

We have also a GIG SCHEDULED for Friday 14th of May. The location is Music Bar Frank Mähönen in Haukipudas. Rock!

25.3.2004

Ilkka Harjula has been assigned as the new webmaster for the Ignis Fatuus homepages. The plan is to update the pages to correspond to the current situation.

The collective wish of the band is that Timo would move back to Oulu from Helsinki as soon as possible so that we could start playing with him again!

28.8.2002

We would like to thank Jussi Kauppila (again), who have designed covers for our demos Traveller and Whispers. If you feel you are needing that kind of artwork or something similar, contact us, so we can ask Jussi to help you.

27.8.2002

few links added, check them out.

10.6.2002

At the moment Timo is living in Helsinki. That's why we have a little problem to play as a band. Don't ask when/if he's coming back...

21.1.2002

We have started to play together after a quite long brake. So IF is back in the business.

Unfortunately, Alexi Ranta has decided to leave IF to pursue more important activities in his life. This talented guitarist played important role in IF for several years. His place would be very difficult to fill, so we are not looking for replacement. We wish all the best for you Alexi!

20.9.2001

Our new songs(Fiends and Through the Night) are out! Both can be downloaded from MP3 section.

24.8.2001

Lyrics available for those who are interested.

10.8.2001

New homepage published. Take a moment to sign our guestbook.

9.8.2001

Now new songs contain keyboards also, thanks to Jarno and Antti. Singing parts are being recorded.

1.8.2001

www.ignisfatuus.cjb.net registered.

30.7.2001

The bass and rythm guitar lines have been recorded for two new songs. I think that the drum parts will be done next.

18.5.2001

A new song, Traveller, has been added to the MP3 section. The song features Jarno in vocals and is a little bit harder than the songs in Whispers demo. Enjoy!

I have been practising two new songs lately. We have discussed of recording them in near future. The only problem is that one of those songs is very difficult to play (at least the drum part) so it will take a while for me to learn how to play it.

12.4.2001

Due the lack of decent rehersal place Ignis Fatuus has been forced to slow down for a while. Ignis Fatuus is still missing a singer, too. Petri, who sang in our Whispers demo, is busy with his new band Blind Alley. Jarno has recorded a four-song demo for them, and in my opinion it sounds really good.

We recorded drum tracks for a new song a few months ago and now the song lacks only the vocal tracks. We have also discussed of recording couple of new songs in near future. I will keep you informed about the progression.

7.11.2000

Lion Music did not have enough time to produce our record, so we will keep on searching the suitable record label.

2.10.2000

Those who undestand Italy can read a review of Whispers at Stargazer magazine. Yesterday we got trouble with Antti's DX7 which started to sparkle and smoke. Luckily Jarno got it fixed.

20.9.2000

Finnish prog-metal label Lion Music has showed interest on us... I'll keep you informed.

19.9.2000

Some people have already received our packages according to their e-mail messages. Shame that there has been no messages from record labels.

18.9.2000

The pile of demos has been sent! So we patiently wait for the responses...

11.9.2000

A pile of demos is ready and waiting to be posted to the record companys, zines and fans all over the world. Whispers -demo has got great reviews on the internet, for example in Perpetual Motion. I have included here one of the reviews:

The band is from Finnland and are called Ignis Fatuus. Their website is very sparse but it contains four AWESOME demo MP3s. Musical references include Cynic, Dream Theater, Psychotic Waltz, Fates Warning...it's in general very dark and furious stuff that verges on tech metal at times but sounds more like DT at their most complex MOST of the time ;). Singer reminds me IMMEDIATELY of the singer for the German band Voice, except this guy will hit the ocassional HIIIIIIIGH and also does a death/black rasp. Great variety and fantastic musicianship (listen to that bass guitarist!) abound. Check it OUT!!!!! ----> lmjh

5.9.2000

The cover sheets for new demo are printed. Alexi is back from Helsinki, so we can begin to train with him more often.

23.8.2000

The mp3 -versions of the songs from new Whispers -demo are downloadable! Everything should work now.

22.8.2000

Official homepage of Ignis Fatuus opened. The mp3 links do not work yet, but we will fix this bug soon.
