Band

Ignis Fatuus is a progressive metal band from northern Finland. Our music combines the energy of metal music with complex harmonical and rythmical structures. On top of these ingrediences lies a melodical stream which enriches the whole musical field and thus completes the package.

Ignis Fatuus was founded by Ilkka Harjula and Jarno Juntunen around year 1992. The very first demo from this two-headed group was published year 1993. This unnamed tape contained very hard metal music both extremely fast and slow. The influences were Carcass and Paradise Lost at that time.

The third member, bass player Timo Mustonen joined the group before the year 1994 when the second demo named Cold came out. The music began to gain its form. While the doom metal was still the dominant part, some progressiveness sneaked into songs like Mind and Cold.

Shortly after the release of Cold, Timo Halonen joined band as second guitarist. During this period of time Ignis Fatuus gigged a bit and recorded a few songs. Halonen became famous due to his ability of being able to play Megadeth's Holy Wars intro after serious boozing.

Halonen left the band before the year 1996 when the third demo, Coronation, was released. Ignis Fatuus returned its trio form and performed around the Oulu area. The music in Coronation was more and more progressive, while the vocals were still heavily trash-metal oriented. Shortly after the releasing of the demo the second guitarist Alexi Ranta found his way to IF.

Before Whispers -demo was released in August 2000, keyboard player Antti Hanninen joined as a part of the band. The music was now very progressive and vocals were performed by high-pitched singer Petri Kangas. The metal roots were still present, and the power in the music was not lost under the complex rhythmic or melodic structures.

The latest recording, Traveller -demo, was released in autumn/winter 2001. Jarno returned to vocals, so Petri is not heard on this demo. However, Petri and Ilkka continued working together in a band called Blind Alley.

Nowadays Ignis Fatuus has four regular members. The original duo is still there. Guitarist Alexi Ranta decided to leave the band in January 2002. Needless to say, after Alexi was gone, Timo's decision to move to Helsinki few months later wasn't exactly what the band were looking for. But after a while, the band pulled things back together, and currently the lead guitarist post is filled by Lauri Jounela and the bass is played by Jaakko Koskiniemi. Antti left the band in 2006 when he moved to Helsinki (surprize!). Sometimes it feels that here are more ex-Ignis Fatuus members in Helsinki area than full-time members in Oulu.

Musically speaking, Ignis Fatuus is heading now forward starting from the Traveller -demo. Harsh vocals, strict rhythm, and strong melodic lines still dominate our music. We have a couple of new songs ready to be recorded in the near future, and we have also rehearsed a set of songs (both old and new) to be performed in the gigs.
