Body

The body is a -76 1502. This is how it looked in 1996 when the project started. It was in pretty good shape with a little rust but without engine and interior. The glassfiber front fenders and the rear flares were already installed. Also the rear panel was changed to the earlier model with the round tail lights. Obviously the shell needed a complete restoration.

The regulations require a full roller cage. To make the chassis stiffer the cage was attached by welding in many points. After season-99 there were some extra tubes added to increase the stiffness.

The front part of the body was changed so that it is removable. It helps a lot when taking out the engine.

Suspension

The suspension is propably the most important part in a racecar. So that was the section to really concentrate in the beginning. 2 1/4 inch coil springs are used in every corners. Front dampers are adjustable Konis and at the rear there are Avo Shocks coilovers. Front 22 mm antiroll bar was found from Opel Record and track arms are from E12 520. Nowdays there are also adjustable camber plates with uniball bearings.

Brakes

Brake parts are mostly from a 323i E21. 323i front discs are fitted to 1502 struts with 316 hubs. 4-piston calipers are stripped from a Volvo 240. Rear discs and calipers are from 323i as well as the rear control arms. Handbrake has been removed because it got sometimes stuck and it's pretty useless in a racer. The master cylinder is stock 1502 but the booster is changed to a smaller one from Ford Escort. The brake assembly under the hood is modified to make room for carburator.

Driveline

Clutch, gearbox and the differential are stock. For 00-season the clutch will be changed to 228 mm with copper disc. The gearbox will also be changed to something more appropriate for racing.

Engine

Engine block is from 2002. It has been bored to 90 mm (+1 mm) so the volume is a little over 2 liters. The pistons are from tii to get higher compressions.

Head is E12 model used in tii and 520i. It has 46 mm inlet and 38 mm outlet valves. Camshaft is Dr.Schrick 292 which is a street cam. It will be changed when the budget allows to get a 304 or 316.

Because of the power/weight -ratio calculations it is only possible to use one 2-barrel carburator to fit in the C-class. The carb is Weber DCOE 45.

The whole engine is moved back about 70 mm to get better weight distribution. Radiator is from a 6-cylinder 320 and the fan is from Nissan. Engine is close to stock to keep it reliable. With these modifications there was 117 hp measured from the rear wheels.
