B.  Background Summary:

Ruth Goldstein actually had a very conventional childhood...if you're
a Jew growing up in Jerusalem, that is. Her parents are reformed
Jews, the movement having become almost the Jewish mainstream since
the discovery that humanity was not alone, for they were the ones
best able to adapt to this.

At the same time, Jewish tradition had, if anything strengthened,
pervading her life, but not in the rigid ways of orthodoxy. One
/avoided/ work on the sabbat, but sometimes things must be done, and
if kosher occasionally went by the wayside, it was not considered a
disaster. An only child, she was perhaps somewhat spoilt, but always
cared for and loved.

A bright, curious child, she nonetheless grew to have an abiding
faith, a faith that strengthened her sense of position in the world.
As fluent in Hebrew as English, and as interested in the stars and
the races out there as the mysteries of god, she was very much torn
between the two, but eventually made her decision. She obtained an
undergraduate degree in psychology and theology, and then trained as
a Rabbi. The stars, however, she had not forgotten.

After two years working in Jerusalem, she met a Starfleet officer,
and began to wonder if she had made the right decision after all. She
mentioned that it was almost a shame StarFleet did not really have
chaplains...but the thought was with her. She made some inquiries and
discovered that if she applied to OCS, she could be qualified for a
counselor billet. It was still a difficult situation. She knew that
if she ever left StarFleet, she would have no problem returning to
this life. She would still be a rabbi...that was not something that
could be taken away from her. But would the average StarFleet officer
handle being counseled and guided by somebody as religious as she
was? Eventually...she realized that she was getting no younger, and
that if she was going to do this, now was the time.

She entered OCS, and proved that she could take the pace, something
which surprised several of her class-mates...she was hardly the most
conventional candidate, after all.

V.  Skills Profile

Ruth is a trained psychologist and an experienced counselor, used to
dealing with a mix of ages and genders, but she is more used to
tending to those of her own religion. Fortunately, she is ecumenical
in outlook, believing all religions, beliefs and cultures to be of
strong value, and is, in fact, quite a firm believer in IDIC.
Reasonably intelligent, she has picked up the necessary skills to be
a starfleet officer, although she has no interest in a line billet.
Her true gift is that she is an exceptional listener, with her door
always open to the problems of others.

She is also good with children, although this might not come up on
the average billet. Her faith and personality give her the ability to
handle tough situations without any risk of losing it, indeed, she
can come over as extremely calm, even under fire (metaphorical, or
even literal). She's also not afraid to pick up a phaser and use it
if she has to...she's a woman of peace, but not a classical pacifist.

VI.  Recent Fitness Report

Of the candidates I have seen come through OCS, Ruth Goldstein has
one of the more unusual backgrounds. She is well-educated, an
extremely gifted counselor, and has shown an ability to adapt beyond
what I would have expected from somebody with primarily theological
training. She has picked up the required basics quickly enough,
although she would have difficulty handling engineering beyond being
an extra warm body.

She is one of the calmest people under fire I have encountered, and
although non-aggressive, is willing to fight if she has to. In fact,
my primary concern would be how others might react to her background,
and her billet may well have to be carefully chosen to avoid
conflicts. She is also, whilst experienced in dealing with people, a
little naive scientifically, and often does have to have things
explained to her in 'laymen's terms'.

However, I have no hesitation in recommending that she be passed for
assignment, with the reservations on choice of billet I have
specified.

VII.  Psychological Profile

Ruth Goldstein is an extremely stable person, although she does have
some issues with being unsure of her own decisions, especially those
of the most personal nature. Extremely calm in almost all situations,
she tends to hide her emotions rather than revealing them, and she
does have a strong reluctance to seek counseling herself, which could
cause problems in the future.

However, she does have a knack of projecting that calm to others that
is part personality, part training. Her relationships with others
tend to be healthy, she has no issues with her family or her past
that are worth being concerned about, and she has a good, solid
interest in other worlds and other cultures, with no tendency towards
xenophobia. I have few concerns about her at this point.

VIII.  Current Recreational Interests

Cook. Ruth is a good cook, and loves to share traditional Jewish and
middle Eastern recipes with her friends, something that will probably
pass to her shipmates.

She also likes to surround herself with greenery, and would not be
happy without a few plants in her cultures, and while not an expert
gardener, she doesn't have a black thumb either.

IX.  Miscellaneous Information

This is the second character I was talking about.

I realize that this is an unusual character and could even be
controversial, and I would understand if you say you'd rather I went
with something else (although I hope not, I've done quite a bit of
research for her). I am a non-practicing Jew myself, and intend to
handle this with the utmost respect...I just thought it would be
interesting.
