One-fanged God. Ares Blackmane appears to be one of the very few exceptions
of the rule.
Son of the Lyran Ambassador's aide and a Medical officer, Ares Blackmane
was born and raised in the city of Jaleyi, at the shore of Voroth Sea on planet
Vulcan.
Ares learned early to control his emotions, and has exercised it through his
life - a single flicker of his ears means he's rolling on the floor laughing,
and that
happens once in a blue moon. He never raises his voice, but his silences can
make Klingons shiver.
During his youth, Ares began frequenting a restaurant held by a small Christian
monastery. The thought of a benevolent god who allows humans to kill his own son
without retaliation fascinated him, as the Lyran One-fanged God would never
allow
such a travesty. He often engaged the monks in religious debate.
Gradually, he grew disillusioned of his old faith, and chose to follow the
teachings of the Bible. This caused friction in his family, particularly with
his father, which grew worse over time. Ares applied secretly to Starfleet
Academy, and once approved, he took his baptism and left his old life behind
him.
At the beginning of his life in Starfleet, Ares had very serious mindset and
took
every duty as a challenge: he received the nickname "Stalker in the Night"
during his Academy days for taking night watch duty too seriously. Ares,
mistaking it as a honorific, attached it to his name and has kept it there after
learning better - he has developed a somewhat twisted sense of humor during
his career as well.
From the Vulcan science-biased education, Ares learned to consider scientific
and medical problems as challenges to face and overcome. If lives are saved
or improved in the process, it's a bonus.
As a medical officer, Ares takes any ailment from common cold to the Rigelian
Kassaba Fever as an enemy to beat, and does so in methodical, no-nonsense
manner. He doesn't waste time with bedside manners, though, except if he
feels the patients needs advice on taking care of themselves.
During his service in the Starfleet Academy, Ares conducted a series of
experiments with volunteer cadet subjects, over the effects of different diets
and physical exercise routines. Nothing questionable in the tests, their results
have improved the overall health in the academy, but Ares' way of conducting
them were very demanding to the participants. "The Fuzzy Mengele" is a name
now known and feared through the Federation among junior Starfleet officers.
Ares is in prime condition fit for a Lyran
frontline warrior twenty years
younger, thanks to a healthy diet he rarely strays from, and demanding
physical exercises.
